Thailand Earthquake Shakes Bangkok and Myanmar

A massive earthquake in Thailand and Myanmar rocked Southeast Asia today, Friday, March 28, 2025, leaving people scared and buildings in ruins. The 7.7 earthquake, reported by the USGS (United States Geological Survey), hit near Mandalay, Myanmar, and its tremors reached as far as Bangkok, Thailand. This Thailand Myanmar earthquake has caused big damage, with reports of deaths, collapsed buildings, and fears of a tsunami. Here’s everything you need to know about this earthquake today in easy Indian English!

What Happened in the Thailand Earthquake Today?

At around 1:20 PM local time (12:50 PM IST), a powerful 7.7 earthquake Myanmar struck near Mandalay, the second-biggest city in Myanmar (also called Burma). The USGS earthquake map shows the epicentre was just 17 km from Mandalay, at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow quakes like this cause more shaking and damage, and that’s exactly what happened.

The earthquake in Thailand today was felt strongly in Bangkok, over 700 km away, where a skyscraper under construction near Chatuchak Market collapsed. In Mandalay Myanmar, buildings fell, roads cracked, and people ran out in panic. The earthquake Bangkok shook high-rise buildings, forcing hundreds to rush to the streets. Even in Chiang Mai, a tourist city in northern Thailand, people felt the ground tremble.

The USGS earthquakes team says this is the strongest quake in Myanmar in over 100 years. A smaller 6.4 magnitude aftershock hit 12 minutes later, adding to the chaos. Right now, rescue teams are working hard in both Thailand and Myanmar to save people trapped under debris.

Bangkok Earthquake Today: Buildings Collapse, Lives Lost

In Bangkok Thailand, the earthquake in Bangkok caused a big shock. A 30-storey building under construction fell down, killing at least 8 people, including 7 workers, according to Bangkok’s governor, Chadchart Sittipunt. Over 90 people are still missing under the rubble, and rescue workers are racing against time. The Thai government has declared Bangkok a “disaster area” because of the Bangkok earthquake today.

One worker in Bangkok told news channels, “Everything started shaking—I thought it was a bomb! Then the building just came down.” Videos on social media show dust clouds and people screaming as the skyscraper fell. The Stock Exchange of Thailand even stopped trading this afternoon because of the Thailand earthquake Bangkok.

The earthquake Bangkok today also caused traffic jams as people left offices and homes. Some metro lines were stopped for safety checks, making things worse in the busy city. In Chiang Mai earthquake reports, people ran out of shops and hotels, but no major damage has been reported there yet.

Myanmar Earthquake Today: Mandalay in Trouble

Closer to the epicentre, the earthquake in Myanmar has hit hard. In Mandalay Myanmar, a city of 1.6 million people, buildings have collapsed, and the famous Royal Palace took damage. A mosque in Mandalay fell, killing at least 3 people, while a school in Taungoo trapped over 20 children under debris. The Myanmar earthquake today has left hospitals in Mandalay and the capital, Naypyitaw, full of injured people.

A rescue worker in Mandalay told the BBC, “The damage here is huge—hundreds are hurt, and we’re still counting the dead.” Myanmar’s military government says at least 144 people have died across the country, with 96 in Naypyitaw, 18 in Sagaing, and 30 in Mandalay. But getting exact numbers is tough because Myanmar (or Burma) is in a civil war, and internet services are down in many places.

The 7.7 earthquake Myanmar also damaged roads and bridges, making it hard for help to reach people. The Red Cross says power lines are down in Mandalay and Sagaing, slowing rescue efforts. Social media posts show smoke rising from Mandalay University after a fire broke out during the quake.

Thailand Myanmar Earthquake: Why So Strong?

The Thailand earthquake and Myanmar earthquake happened because of the Sagaing Fault, a big crack in the earth that runs through Myanmar. The USGS says this fault has caused strong quakes before—six of them over 7.0 magnitude between 1930 and 1956. Today’s 7.7 earthquake is the biggest since then, and its shallow depth made it extra dangerous.

Experts at USGS earthquakes warn that “thousands could be dead” because of how close the quake was to big cities like Mandalay. The shaking was felt not just in Thailand and Myanmar, but also in parts of China, Vietnam, and even Meghalaya in India. This makes it one of the biggest earthquakes today in the region.

Tsunami Fears After Earthquake in Thailand Today

After the earthquake in Thailand and Myanmar, people started worrying about a tsunami. Thailand’s west coast, including Phuket, faced a deadly tsunami in 2004 after a quake in the Indian Ocean. But good news—no tsunami warning has been issued yet for this Thailand Myanmar earthquake.

The USGS says the quake happened on land, not under the sea, so the chance of a tsunami is low. Still, officials in Bangkok Thailand and coastal areas are keeping a close eye. “We’re ready if anything changes,” said Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

How Are People Reacting to Earthquake Today?

The earthquake today has left people in Thailand and Myanmar shaken. In Bangkok, a filmmaker named Mick O’Shea told the BBC, “I was in a café when it hit—everything swayed, and I ran out fast.” In Chiang Mai, a 76-year-old shopkeeper named Sai said, “This is the strongest tremor I’ve ever felt—I ran out in my slippers!”

In Mandalay Myanmar, a witness said, “The whole city shook. Buildings fell, and rescue teams are everywhere now.” On X, people are posting videos of the Bangkok earthquake and Myanmar earthquakes, showing cracked roads, fallen walls, and scared crowds.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Concerned about the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. India is ready to help.” Many countries are offering aid as the death toll rises.

Earthquakes Today: What’s Next?

The 7.7 earthquake isn’t over yet. The USGS earthquake map shows aftershocks are still happening, including a 6.4 magnitude one near Mandalay. Experts say more small quakes could hit in the coming days, so people in Thailand and Myanmar need to stay careful.

In Bangkok, rescue teams are still digging through the collapsed skyscraper. In Myanmar, the military has asked for international help—a rare move for them. The Red Cross and other groups are rushing to Mandalay and Naypyitaw with food, water, and medical supplies.

Final Thoughts

The earthquake in Thailand today and Myanmar earthquake today have turned a normal Friday into a day of fear and loss. From the Bangkok earthquake collapsing buildings to the earthquake in Myanmar hitting Mandalay hard, this 7.7 earthquake has shown how powerful nature can be. As rescue work continues, people in Thailand and Burma are hoping for safety and help. Stay tuned for more updates on this big story!
